Awarding Ceremony for National Science Popularization and Education Base and National Scientist Spirit Education Base of Macao Science Center Is Held Today

Mr. Xu Yanhao, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) and member of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC), presented a plaque to the Macao Science Center this morning (September 22) as the “National Science Popularization and Education Base” and “National Scientist Spirit Education Base”. Witnessed by Ms. Xu Ting, Director of the Department of Education and Youth Affairs of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao S.A.R., and Mr. Kong Chi Meng, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Macao Science Center Limited, the plaque was accepted by Ms. Mok Ian Ian, President of the Board of Directors of Macao Science Center Limited. Members of the Shareholders’ Meeting, Board of Directors, Supervisory Committee and Consultative Committee of Macao Science Center and the Chairman of the Macao Science and Technology Association, Mr. José Chui Sai Peng, attended the ceremony.

In March and May this year, Macao Science Center was honored as a “National Science Popularization and Education Base” and a “National Scientist Spirit Education Base”, respectively, making it the only science and technology venue in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan to be awarded the two national education bases at the same time, fully demonstrating the support and recognition of the State for Macao’s work in science popularization and education and scientist spirit education, and highlighting the progress of Macao’s integration into the overall development of the country.

Mr. Xu Yanhao, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) and member of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC), said, “Macao Science Center has been listed as national science education and popularization base and becomes the first educational base for scientist spirit in Hong Kong and Macao. The naming of the two bases is not only an honor, but also a responsibility. The Center should continue to build and maintain them while making good use of them effectively. CAST will continue to support the Macao Science Center in promoting the construction of two bases to serve the science and technology innovation and popularization in Macao. I hope that the Center will take this opportunity to give full play to its own characteristics and strengths, take patriotism and love for Macao as its values, carry out in-depth popularization of science and technology, vigorously promote the spirit of scientists, further develop services, expand the scope of services, innovate the publicity methods, strengthen the development and application of quality exhibits, integrate the popularization of science into serving the needs of the public and the innovative development of science and technology in Macao, and inspire and guide science and technology workers, especially young people with scientist spirit, to make new and greater contributions to the development of Macao and its integration into the overall development of the country.”

Ms. Mok Ian Ian, President of the Board of Directors of Macao Science Center said at the award ceremony, “It is very important to let the community know about scientists, scientific research and scientific and technological achievements through science popularization, because the knowledge of science has become a way of understanding the world, and Macao Science Center is willing to be a bridge between science and the public. ‘Promoting science popularization and education for young people in Macao’ is one of the important missions of Macao Science Center. Through diversified science popularization and education activities and the MSC-School Collaboration Program launched in recent years, Macao Science Center guides the public, especially young people, to discover and understand a wider world beyond their daily horizons and activity space, feel the vastness of the universe and understand the diversity of things, so that the public can experience and apply science. This will make science interesting and approachable and the Center an educational and fun place for science outside the campus and a place where parents and children pay frequent visits. We are committed to fostering a social atmosphere of science, innovation and scientist spirit, so that our next generation will become independent and innovative thinkers who are scientifically literate, curious and imaginative about the world.”

To support the National Science Day, the Center launched nearly 40 activities in September, including lectures, concerts, science dramas, Starry Night astronomical science popularization activities, night tour to MSC, a number of MSC-school cooperation and teacher training sessions, as well as online education resource platform and the Chinese scientist spirit podcast series. A new science drama, “Spirit of Chinese Scientists: Meeting Chinese Scientists in the Metaverse - Huang Danian” will be launched today (September 22), and a dome lecture on “Windows to The Universe: Planetariums All over The World” will be held on September 24. Furthermore, the Center will participate in the 2022 national tour of scientist spirit film “Science Dreams in Light and Shadow” in national science popularization venues in October, playing six documentaries and seven animated microfilms “Science Idols” on the theme of scientist spirit at the Planetarium. Details will be announced later.

Macao Science Center will continue to actively carry out science popularization and education projects, and strengthen the promotion of scientist spirit to the public through various forms and media to promote science popularization and education among adolescents and facilitate the spread of novel technologies and science communication.

Macao Science Center is open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. from Monday to Sunday regardless of public holidays. It is closed on Thursdays and Lunar New Year’s Eve.
