Macao Science Center Is Listed in the First Batch of National Scientist Spirit Education Bases

    The China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) and the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) organized the online main event for 2022 National Science and Technology Workers Day this morning (May 30), announcing the List of Accredited "Scientist Spirit Education Bases" for 2022, and the Macao Science Center was included in the first batch of National Scientist Spirit Education Bases. At the same time, an online awarding ceremony was held for the first batch of 140 scientist spirit education bases. This is the second time that the Macao Science Center has been honored as a national education base after being listed as a National Science Popularization and Education Base in March this year. The Macao Science Center is the only science and technology venue in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan to be listed as a national education base, demonstrating the state's support and recognition of Macao SAR in science popularization and education and the promotion of scientist spirit publicity and education.

    In March this year, seven authorities, including the China Association for Science and Technology, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, issued the Notice on the Construction and Management of Scientist Spirit Education Bases, which divides scientist spirit education bases into eight categories, namely science and technology museums, national key laboratories, memorials (relics) of major science and technology projects, memorials and former residences of science and technology figures, research institutes, schools, science and technology enterprises and others. 473 bases were recommended by national societies and local associations for science and technology. After the procedures of selection, assessment and public announcement, the List of Accredited Scientist Spirit Education Bases for 2022 was issued. The Macao Science Center was recommended by the Chinese Society for Urban Studies and successfully selected, reflecting the efforts made by the Center to integrate into the national development pattern by fulfilling its mission of science popularization and education and promoting scientist spirit. For example, it organized the "Grand Scientific Exhibition—Innovation Makes Our Life Better" to review the development and significant achievements in science and technology since the founding of the People's Republic of China. It also continues to produce and launch original online programs on the spirit of Chinese scientists, including the scientific achievements and pioneering deeds of many scientists who have made significant contributions to China, including Qian Xuesen, one of the "Fathers of Two Bombs and One Satellite" and Yuan Longping, the "Father of Hybrid Rice", so as to promote the stories and important contributions of scientists who have worked for the advancement of science and technology, the improvement of people's livelihood and the development of China in the historical periods of revolution, construction, reform and the new era to the public, and encourage Macao's youth to learn from the patriotic, innovative, pragmatic, dedicated, collaborative and educational spirit of scientists.

    This year, the Macao Science Center will optimize the "Chinese Scientist Spirit Education Zone" in the Exhibition Center and set up a long-term gallery on the theme of the Chinese scientist spirit to continuously and actively promote the Chinese scientist spirit to young people and the public. The Center incorporates the scientist spirit into its science popularization activities, center-school cooperation and thematic exhibitions, allowing young people to acquire scientific knowledge and practical skills, while developing a love of science, a pursuit for innovation, a respect for knowledge and a dedication to science.

    Macao Science Center is open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. from Monday to Sunday regardless of public holidays. It is closed on Thursdays and Lunar New Year's Eve.
