Macao Science Center Will Launch the First Phase of Science Popularization and Education Program for Students in the New Academic Year
In order to develop the ability of primary and secondary school students to explore and solve problems with science, enhance their scientific literacy and interest, and promote schools to make full use of resources such as the venues and facilities of Macao Science Center to support science and technology lessons, the Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ) and Macao Science Center will implement the first phase of Science Popularization and Education Program for Students (hereafter referred to as the "Program") in an orderly manner from the 2022/2023 academic year. The first phase of the program is targeted at students in the third grade of primary school and the first grade of junior high school in the 2022/2023 academic year. The program support schools to take their students to conduct science exploration activities at the Center in the form of a science day. The program for the third grade of primary school will be carried out between October and November this year, while the first grade of junior high school will be scheduled between February and March next year.
The themes and contents of the program are designed based on the curriculum guidelines of science and technology for primary and secondary schools in Macao. The four main activity themes for students in the third grade of primary school include optics, heat and cold, plants, astronomy and aerospace. Participants will visit the Planetarium, watch science drama and science demonstrations, visit science mini-exhibits and participate in exploration activities to learn about science and technology in an interesting and interactive way. Themes of the activities for students in the first grade of junior high school include astronomy, aerospace and earth sciences. In addition to learning at the Planetarium and watching science drama, participants will make use of the mobile dome set up in the atrium of the Exhibition Center, and "Small Planet, Big World" exhibits and mobile devices in the Space Science Gallery to learn stargazing skills, and they are expected to develop an interest in science and technology and enhance their scientific literacy.
The Science Popularization and Education Program for Students for the 2022/2023 academic year is open for application from now on and is free of charge. Schools interested in participating in the above program may arrange for their teachers to complete the appointment form on or before September 16 (third grade of primary school) or September 30 (first grade of junior high school) for registration. The activity is subject to adjustments due to venue and staffing arrangements. In line with the anti-pandemic measures of the Macao SAR Government, all visitors are required to wear a mask, take a temperature check, scan the site QR code of MSC, and disinfect their hands with an alcohol-based hand sanitizer before entering. MSC appreciates visitors' understanding of and cooperation with the above measures and hopes that visitors will wear masks throughout the activities and be aware of personal hygiene at all times. If necessary, visitors can disinfect their hands with the alcohol-based hand sanitizers at the entrance, the galleries, and the Gift Shop of MSC.
Macao Science Center is open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. from Monday to Sunday regardless of public holidays. It is closed on Thursdays and Lunar New Year's Eve.
