Macao Science Center Will Host the "Total Lunar Eclipse" Outdoor Observation Event Tomorrow and
Stargazing Weather Lecture in the Middle of the Month
In accordance with the data from the Meteorological and Geophysics Bureau (SMG), a total lunar eclipse will occur over Macao tomorrow night (November 8). The Macao Science Center, as one of the best places to observer the total lunar eclipse, will hold the "Total Lunar Eclipse" outdoor observation event on the seawall behind the Heart-shaped Tree tomorrow evening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., which belongs to the series of "Starry Night" astronomical science popularization. Welcome to enjoy the only total lunar eclipse visible with naked eyes in Macao this year and the once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon of "Moon Over Uranus" at the Center.
To popularize the knowledge of astronomy, as always, the Center will organize teachers and students of multiple schools in Macao to participate in this astronomical event, during which three astronomical telescopes of different sizes will be set up, including 20" Newtonian Reflector Telescope, 14" reflector telescope and 9.25" refractor telescope, to help the public to experience the rare phenomenon of a total lunar eclipse and "Moon over Uranus" at the same time and experience the fun of outdoor observation of astronomical phenomenon. Citizens are also welcome to attend the above activities. Staff of the Center will be on site to guide participants in operating the telescopes and introduce astronomical knowledge.
Tomorrow night's total lunar eclipse will begin before moon rise and the key time in the process are the beginning of the penumbra eclipse (4:02 p.m. on November 8), the first contact (5:09 p.m.), the moonrise (5:39 p.m.), and the second contact (6:16 p.m.), middle of an eclipse (6:59 p.m.), the third contact (7:41 p.m.), the last contact (8:49 p.m.) and the end of the penumbra (9:56 p.m.). The public can observe the lunar eclipse with either naked eyes or telescopes toward east and in open areas.
"Total Lunar Eclipse" Observation Event can be participated without registration. However, arrangements may be canceled or changed due to factors such as weather. Please visit our website (www.msc.org.mo) and pay attention to social media announcements for details. Those who are unable to attend the event in person are also welcomed to watch the live webcast through our Facebook page and the YouTube channel of the Online Educational Resource Platform to track the process of the total lunar eclipse in real time.
In addition, the Center will hold the Stargazing Weather Lecture of the series of "Starry Night" astronomical popularization activities on November 19 (Saturday) from 5 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. at the Planetarium. One of the founding members of the Macao Meteorological Society, Dr. Choi Chun Chong, Chairman and CEO of Knoweather (Macao) Meteorological Technology Company Limited, will share with the participants how to use common meteorological data to observe the weather to improve the success rate of stargazing and deal with bad weather conditions as early as possible. No registration is required and admission to the above lecture is free. Free tickets will be distributed by the ticketing office of MSC on the day of the event.
Macao Science Center is open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. from Monday to Sunday regardless of public holidays. It is closed on Thursdays and Lunar New Year's Eve. To learn more about the activities and information of the Center, please visit the website of Macao Science Center at www.msc.org.mo and check the latest announcements on social media.
