In response to the Earth Hour movement initiated by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) which aims to raise public awareness of climate change and energy saving, Macao Science Center will turn off its non-essential lighting for 1 hour on Saturday, 28thMarch at 8:30pm to show support forthe event.
For five consecutive years the Center has taken part in Earth Hour. Besides, the Center has always been committed to environmental protection by optimizing its facilities, and by educating our visitors about environmental issues with our Eco Conservation Gallery and “Macao Science Center and School Collaboration Project”. Through participating in Earth Hour, the Center hopes to spread the message of energy saving and environmental protection to the public.
On 28th March, visitors to the Planetarium can enjoy a complementary short program on light pollution called “Losing the Dark” at the beginning of each Dome Show. The program will show us the impact of light pollution on human health and on the enviroment, and allow us to experience the beautifulstarry sky afterlights are turned off.
Launched in Sydney in 2007, by the WWF, the Earth Hour has now grown into the world’s largest environmental mass-participation event. This year, more than 7,000 cities in over 160 countries and territories, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Hong Kong are participating in Earth Hour, to encourage the public to cherish the
natural resources, to support the use of renewable energy and to reduce carbon emissions to help improve the environment.
