To raise public awareness of how optical technologies promote sustainable development and provide solutions to worldwide challenges in energy, medicine, agriculture and communications, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization proclaimed 2015 as the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL 2015).
As one of the themed activities for IYL 2015, Macao Science Center (MSC) has invited Professor Shuji Nakamura, 2014 Nobel Laureate in Physics, Professor of Materials Department, Solid State Lighting and Energy Center, University of California Santa Barbara, “Father of Blue LED” to deliver a lecture titled “Developments of InGaN-based High Brightness Blue LED and Future Lighting” on Friday, 24 April at the Convention Center of MSC. This Nobel Laureate lecture is organized by Macao Science Center, and is co-organized by Macao Association for Promotion of Science and Technology. Also sponsored by MGM MACAU and supported by Macau Properties and Facilities Management Association and SORAA respectively.
During the public lecture, Professor Nakamura shall review the history and background story of the key scientific issues solved in order to realize high efficiency solid state lighting. Then he shall talk about the ongoing research on laser lighting, especially on how to solve the LED efficiency and thermal droops that have been identified as key roadblocks to cost reduction and further improvements in solid state lighting.
From 24 April to 6 May, an exhibition on blue LED will be available in the lobby of MSC to showcase the breakthroughs that blue LED has made to modern lighting and its contributions to preserving the environment and saving energy.
The Nobel Laureate lecture will be conducted in English. Admission is free and registration starts today and ends on 24 April. All are welcome.
