Macao Science Center Organizes a Movie-watching Event about the Female Pioneer Madam Ye to Celebrate the “March 8” International Women’s Day
This year, the United Nations sets the theme for International Women’s Day as “Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality”, calling for a more equal and safe technological world. In response to the call of the United Nations and celebrate International Women’s Day, this afternoon, Macao Science Center organized a movie-watching event about the female pioneer Madam Ye to celebrate the “March 8” International Women’s Day at the Planetarium, and invited nearly 100 women representatives from the Social Welfare Bureau (IAS) of the Macao SAR Government and various local societies to watch this patriotic and inspiring quality film. By holding this event, Macao Science Center aims to promote the spirit of scientists in the new era and highlight the remarkable historical achievements of Chinese women in promoting the development of science and technology, the prosperity of the state and the well-being of the people.
Ms. Mok Ian Ian, President of the Board of Directors of Macao Science Center Limited, delivered a speech at the movie-watching event: We are in a time when technological development is greatly affecting people’s lives, and understanding the development of science and technology is a way of understanding the world. Macao Science Center is willing to be a bridge between the public and science popularization and education. To support China’s inclusion of science popularization and scientific literacy in the humanities construction, young people and women should tell China’s story and Macao’s story about science and technology in the fields of education and culture in an innovative way. The Center will accompany women on the road of science popularization to create a better life.
Ms. Lam Pui Seong, acting director of the Department of Family and Community Services of the Social Work Bureau delivered a speech: Technology is closely related to life, and advances in technology and information have brought us a more convenient and quality life. We hope that women will be inspired by Academician Ye’s course of struggle and research achievements, and encourage women to make use of the technology and information platform to enhance their capabilities and participation and find entrepreneurial opportunities.
Madam Ye is a documentary film on the typical exploits of Academician Ye Shuhua, who is an internationally renowned astronomer, an important founder of astronomy in China, a strategic scientist, and the first female director of an astronomical observatory in China. The film tells the story of her 70-year dedication to astronomy, and fully demonstrates her strong patriotism, enthusiasm for science, hope for China’s scientific and technological prosperity, as well as her spirit of being eager to innovate and having no fear of difficulties.
Guests attending the event included: Ms. Mok Ian Ian, President of the Board of Directors of Macao Science Center Limited, Mr. Sylvester Cheong, Deputy Curator of Macao Science Center, Ms. Lam Pui Seong, acting director of the Department of Family and Community Services and Ms. Ng Sio Man , acting chief of the Social Assistance Division of the Social Work Bureau of the Macao SAR Government, Mr. Lai Wai Leong, Deputy Head of the Task Force on “Macao Women Development Goals”, as well as Ms. Kuan Sok Leng and Ms. Lei Man Cheng, Head of Deputy Head of the Task Force on Children’s Rights and Interests of the Committee on Affairs of Women and Children, and representatives from the Women’s General Association of Macau, Macao Federation of Neighborhood Associations, Macao Federation of Trade Unions, Caritas Macau and Young Men’s Christian Association of Macau.
