“Impressions Printing” – Exhibition on Printing Technology Opens Showcasing the Evolution of Printing Technology and Future Trends

Printing is one of the four great inventions of ancient China. The emergence of this technology has a significant contribution to the spreading of culture and knowledge to the world and the evolution of human civilization. During the Northern Song dynasty (11th century), Bi Sheng first made use of clay to create type, and invented the movable type, which is an important milestone in the development of printing. In the 15th century, Gutenberg, a German inventor, invented lead alloy type, special inks for printing, printer and improved the process of typography, which substantially boosted printing efficiency and printing books and newspapers in large quantities.

As time passes and technology advances, traditional printing has long been replaced by offset or digital printing. Modern printing technology not only integrates the scientific achievements in physics, chemistry, optics, computers, electro-mechanics, but the materials, color and special effects processing are also constantly improving in order to meet the different market demands for printed materials.

The Center held an opening ceremony for “Impressions Printing” – Exhibition on Printing Technology this afternoon. The officiating guests were Mr. Steven Lei, Vice-President of Macao Science Center (MSC), Mr. Tou Chi Man, Director of the Macao SAR Government Printing Bureau, Dr. Shiunn-Shyang Chen, Curator of Taiwan National Science & Technology Museum (NSTM), Mr. Pan Sio, Curator of MSC and Mr. Sylvester Cheong, Deputy Curator of MSC.

“Impressions Printing” – Exhibition on Printing Technology starts today at Gallery 2 of the Exhibition Center, exhibiting more than 60 precious relics of the printing industry, old printing equipment and models. There are also interactive multi-media games and hands-on printing workshops, which allow visitors to know more about the ancient and modern printing technology, the various types of printing techniques, the scientific principles of printing, and the latest advancements in printing industry.

This exhibition has 2 phases: the first phase features the early western printing relics provided by NSTM, and a modern printing technology zone which introduces lithography, screen printing, bronzing, UV, embossing, and watermark and other common printing techniques. In the second phase of the exhibition, part of the exhibits will be replaced with new ones, and for the first time, the Center will collaborate with the Macao SAR Government Printing Bureau, the Macao Printing Industry and historians, to set up area featuring the history of printing industry in Macao. This area will display the early printing equipment and tools used in Macao which tell the story of more than 400 years ago, about the booming printing industry of Macao under the influence of Eastern and Western cultures.

During the exhibition, the Center not only does provide tour guide service and printing experience workshops, but the Center will also launch a smartphone application and online Q&A prize-giving game. The Center will organize the “Science x Imagination x Impression” science popularisation public lectures on 13th and 14th June, so visitors may have an opportunity to learn the scientific knowledge of printing technology from different angles.
