Macao Science Center Holds a Lecture by Young Sci-fi Writers Entitled “Reading the Beauty of Science Fiction”
Wondering the Future with New Generation of Sci-fi Writers Through Time Travel
In support of “World Book and Copyright Day”, a lecture by young sci-fi writers entitled “Reading the Beauty of Science Fiction”, organized by the China Writers Association and the Macao Science Center and co-organized by the Cultural and Sports Development Office of the Macao University of Science and Technology, will be held on April 23 at 10:00 a.m. at the Convention Center. Two young Chinese sci-fi writers, Cheng Jingbo and Tianrui Shuofu (He Jian), who have been awarded the highest honor in sci-fi literature, will be invited to Macao to talk about the history of sci-fi literature and the current market state, with the topics of A Brief History of Time Travel and From 0 to 1: Science Fiction Writing and Imagination, respectively. They will share how to learn to write a sci-fi novel from scratch, enabling the public to appreciate the unique charm of sci-fi literature and reflect on how sci-fi writing inspires future technology. The event aims to support the Government of the Macao Special Administrative Region to build a city of reading, encourage science reading and improve the scientific literacy of the public.
Cheng Jingbo is the first female writer to win both the “Galaxy Awards” and “Chinese Nebula Awards”. She specializes in writing sci-fi stories from a female perspective, and exploring the delicate relationship between women and the world. She has won numerous awards including the Special Award of the China Youth Literature Awards and the Emerging Screenwriter of the Chinese International Screenwriting Festival. Her works have been translated into many languages and shared with foreign readers. Her masterpieces include The Upside Down Sky and Till the End of Time, and she edited the first Chinese monograph on female sci-fi writers, She: A Collection of Classics by Chinese Female Sci-Fi Writers. Liu Cixin, the author of The Wandering Earth and The Three-body Problem, has praised Cheng Jingbo’s sci-fi novels as “a blend of science fiction and fantasy, bringing us a brand-new experience at the border of science fiction and fantasy”.
Tianrui Shuofu (He Jian) is the only online writer of the generation after the 95s to have won the “Galaxy Awards” for three consecutive sessions. His works are renowned for professional sci-fi settings and rigorous plotting. Death on Mars and We Live in Nanjing won the “Best Online Literature Award” at the 30th and 32nd Galaxy Awards, while Titan Is Silent won the “Best Original Book Award” at the 33rd Galaxy Awards this year. He has also been awarded the Chinese Nebula Awards, the Young Writer of the Year of the 2019 Dragon TV IP Cloud Festival, and the Outstanding Work of the Fourth China Online Literature + Conference.
