Macao Science Center Is Open Every Day in August
Two New Galleries Are Put to Use and a Brand New Dome Show Is Released
In order to celebrate the pleasant summer with citizens and visitors, Macao Science Center will be open every day in August. It will make itself a good place to escape the summer heat by continuing to hold a series of popular science activities with the theme of "MSC Unveils a Sunny Summer", including the brand new dome show We are Guardians, the opening of the two brand new long-term galleries "Biodiversity Gallery" and "Data Science Gallery", as well as three "Starry Night" astronomical science popularization and education activities covering the "Homemade Star Projector", the "Observation of Perseids" and the "Observation of 'Supermoon and' Saturn".
On August 1, the Planetarium will release the brand new dome show We are Guardians which explains the interlocking relationship between human beings and the natural environment through an interesting animation. Whether it is micro-organisms or large marine lives such as whales, everything is intricately and inextricably linked. The show will also explore the energy flow and cycle of matter between different organisms in the ecosystem and the environment, as well as the impact of human activities on climate change. It is suitable for parents and children to watch together. On the afternoon of August 4, the Exhibition Center will put on three performances of the Meteorological Science Popularization Theater Tour – Tri-color Rain at Gallery 5. All fees are waived. You only need to give a like to the science popularization and education page of Macao Science Center when you enter the venue.
The two brand new long-term galleries "Biodiversity Gallery" and "Data Science Gallery" will also be put to use from August. The "Biodiversity Gallery" (Gallery 6) is jointly prepared by Macao Science Center, the Municipal Affairs Bureau, the Special Collection Unit of the University of Macau Library, Macao entomologist Danny Chi-Man Leong and the Zhejiang Museum of Natural History. There are a variety of biological and mineral specimens, a biological photography zone, an animal park and other multimedia interactive exhibits that integrate augmented reality technology. The concept of biodiversity, the origin, evolution and classification of biological organisms, the unique communication methods of insects, and endangered species and their conservation methods are introduced in detail. In addition, the gallery features a storytelling theater The Tree of Life: Charles Darwin in the hope of strengthening students' understanding of biodiversity and species unique to Macao, and raising public awareness of respect for life and environmental protection. The "Data Science Gallery" (Gallery 12) displays a number of exhibits on network technology and security as well as interactive data games that allow visitors to learn about the development of network security and the battle between attack and defense in the network world, experience how hackers can steal information and learn the key to preventing hacking and maintaining network security.
The Planetarium will organize three "Starry Night" astronomical science popularization activities in August. In the "Homemade Star Projector" activity on August 5, Mr. Kenneith Hui, astronomy officer of the Ho Koon Nature Education cum Astronomical Centre in Hong Kong, will give a dome lecture and preside over a workshop. He will share the principles of making a star projector and guide the participants to make a small star projector using simple materials. On August 12, the "Observation of Perseids" will be held at Stone of Pre-historic Man, Hac Sa Long Chao Kok Coastal Trail, Coloane. Lei Chi Fei, president of the Macao Astronomical Society, will guide the participants to observe the starry sky, identify constellations and enjoy the Perseids with astronomical telescopes. The "Observation of Supermoon and Saturn" will be held at Macao Science Center Seaside on the night of August 31. Participants can use professional astronomical telescopes to appreciate the supermoon and Saturn. Macao Science Center will also arrange for staff to explain relevant popular science knowledge on-site.
In addition to the above-mentioned three "Starry Night" activities, Macao Science Center is currently having the special exhibition Vaccines - Guardian of Human Health. The exhibition is supported by the Education and Youth Development Bureau and the Health Bureau. Through a large number of multimedia interactive exhibits, it comprehensively explains the scientific principles, R&D and production processes, efficacy, applications and future development of vaccines, among other knowledge, so that the audience can learn about the important role of vaccines in protecting human health and cultivate a healthy life philosophy that advocates the boosting of immunity. In particular, the exhibition features a special zone for Macao that introduces the vaccination services and status in Macao, the review of nucleic acid testing stations, the history of pandemics in Macao, as well as common infectious diseases and their corresponding vaccines. Members of the public are welcome to visit.
