MSC Representatives Invited to Deliver a Thematic Speech at BRISMIS 2023

Macao Science Center (MSC) attended the 2023 International Symposium on the Development of Natural Science Museums under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRISMIS 2023) held in Beijing from November 27 to 30. MSC Curator Sio Hon Pan made a special report on "Application and Practice of Data Science in Science Centers and Museums" at the forum of the symposium, arousing the attention and discussion of the participants. This event has positive significance for MSC to deepen the high-quality development of science popularization work and the inter-museum cooperation with international and regional organizations and has achieved the expected results.

In order to respond to the Belt and Road Initiative, the Chinese Association of Natural Science Museums (CANSM) initiated and hosted the first BRISMIS in 2017, which has since then become an important platform for the multilateral cooperation among the science centers and museums of "Belt and Road" countries and regions. MSC has been invited to BRISMIS for successive sessions and BRISMIS has served as an important platform for telling Macao science popularization stories to the outside world. BRISMIS 2023 was hosted in Beijing from November 27 to 30. At the invitation of the symposium, MSC Curator Sio Hon Pan, also a Board Member and Executive Committee Member, led a delegation to attend the symposium and participated in the partner workshops, opening ceremonies, thematic reports and special forums organized by the symposium.

This year's BRISMIS attracted nearly 50 delegates from four international organizations and the science centers and museums of more than 20 countries, as well as over 240 industry insiders from the science centers and museums and science popularization enterprises of China. Under the theme of "STEM Education in Science Centers and Museums Makes a Better Life", participants jointly discussed the philosophy, ideas and measures of STEM education in science centers and museums in the new era and conducted in-depth exchanges in coping with global challenges and promoting the realization of the sustainable development goals of the United Nations. During the special forum session, Curator Sio Hon Pan discussed MSC's use of digital technology to boost the development of science centers and museums based on the topic of "Application and Practice of Data Science in Science Centers and Museums". He also elaborated on two practical cases in detail, i.e., the application of data science in science and technology education in museums and the understanding of collecting visitors' behavior data, which received extensive attention and heated discussion from the participants.

In addition, MSC representatives attended two partner workshops arranged by the symposium, including "Science Education in Science Museums and a Better Life" and "Exploration and Practice of Planetariums in STEM Education". Meanwhile, they listened to the thematic reports delivered by international experts such as Prof. Shahbaz Khan, Director of the UNESCO Multisectoral Regional Office for East Asia, Prof. Wang Xiaoming, Vice President of CANSM, and Director Yoslan Nur of the Kenya National Commission for UNESCO. During the symposium, MSC representatives visited and inspected a number of national-level science centers and museums in Beijing.

The symposium has inspired MSC to further deepen the high-quality development of science popularization work, promoted cooperation and contacts with international and regional science centers and museums, and achieved the expected results.
